What does the fox say? Hang this one on the mantel and find out. It is a colorwork stocking worked toe up, and watching that fox appear round by round is pure joy.

What you get

  • PDF crochet stocking pattern, US terms
  • Colorwork charts
  • Step by step video tutorial
  • Interactive version in the Briana K app: check off rows as you go and your place is saved

Pattern details

  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Finished size: 19 in from folded cuff to toe, 11 in around
  • Yarn: DK weight, shown in WeCrochet City Tweed DK in Snowshoe, Habanero and Toad
  • Yardage: About 450 yds total
  • Hook: G (4 mm)
  • Gauge: 17 sts by 21 rows = 4 in in split single crochet
  • Construction: Worked toe up, with the heel worked last. The colorwork uses split single crochet, also called the waistcoat stitch
  • Notions: removable stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors, leather strip and leather hole punch (optional)

Questions makers ask

  • Is the colorwork hard? It is an intermediate project, but the charts and video walk you through every round.
  • How is the heel made? You leave space for it as you work toe up, then add the heel last.
  • Can I follow it on my phone? Yes. The Briana K app version lets you check off rows and saves your place.

This pattern worked up quickly and had good directions. The graphs were very helpful. I used a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each row. I learned a new technique with the split single crochet that makes a very warm and solid colorwork. Would be great for warm sweaters. Yarns used: City Tweed DK Snowbank 2 balls, Kenai Gloss DK 1 ball, Cranberry Gloss DK 1 ball.
